Island Pride

The 10th October represents the date of Fiji’s independence of the British colonial rule. In celebration, Yasawa islanders compete in an annual sports competition between the local islands.

Each year, one island hosts the event, transforming a school field into a stadium of patriotism, sports, singing and eating. 5 islands wear bespoke local strips and parade their athletes prior to competing. The men compete in netball and volleyball, the women compete in rugby (sevens, of course) and football.

Although the day is one of national pride, for islanders it becomes one of island pride. Each team member represents and supports their island with incredible passion; A deep passion only previously seen through the football fans during a world cup, who’s pride and patriotism is something to behold.
